General registration

Application for Registration

Section 28 of the Act sets out the application requirements for registration. An individual is eligible for registration on the general register if they satisfy the Board that they;

(a) have qualifications recognised by the Board for the purposes of registration on the register to which the application relates; and

(b) have met the requirements determined by the Board to be necessary for the purposes of registration on that register; and

(c) are medically fit to provide veterinary services as a veterinarian; and

(d) are a fit and proper person to be registered on that register; and

(e) they are, unless exempted by the Board, insured in accordance with this Act; and

(f) they have, or propose to have, their principal place of residence in this State.

Process

An application for registration should be made online.

The applicant may need to submit the following information:

  • Current photographic identification lodged through greenID (or National Crime Check with police check)
  • Documentary evidence of any legal change of name if the applicant’s name differs from that shown on the degree certificate.
  • Personal information such as name, email, address etc
  • Letter of professional standing if applying from interstate
  • Primary degree certificate
  • National Police Certificate issued within the last 12 months.

The registration application is a statutory declaration. It is an offence under section 91 of the Act to provide false or misleading information in your application, and criminal penalties may apply. Section 13(a)(iii) of the Regulations also stipulates that providing information relating to veterinarian qualifications for registration knowing that the information is false or misleading in a material particular may be considered unprofessional conduct.

Fees

An application for primary registration on the general register must be accompanied with the prescribed fee including both the application fee, and the annual practice fee. An annual return does not attract an application fee and only the practice fee is required if the veterinarian is renewing their registration. See schedule of fees for more information.

Information to be provided
  • Contact details
  • Particulars of employment
  • A declaration about whether the veterinarian has an impairment that detrimentally affects, or may detrimentally affect, medical fitness to provide veterinary services as a veterinarian that has not been previously disclosed to the Board
  • The status of professional indemnity insurance
  • Whether the veterinarian has engaged in conduct that constitutes an offence punishable by imprisonment for 1 year or more

The Board may require an applicant to submit a medical report or other evidence acceptable to the Board as to the applicant’s medical fitness to provide veterinary services as a veterinarian; or to obtain additional qualifications or experience specified by the Board before the Board determines the application.

Conditions

In certain circumstances, the Board may also determine it necessary to impose conditions on an applicant’s registration including one or more of the following:

(a) a condition restricting the places or times at which the person may provide veterinary services as a veterinarian;

(b) a condition limiting the kind of veterinary services that the person may provide as a veterinarian;

(c) a condition limiting the kind of animal in relation to which the person may provide veterinary services as a veterinarian;

(d) a condition limiting the period during which the registration will have effect;

(e) a condition requiring that the person be supervised in the provision of veterinary services as a veterinarian by a particular person or by a person of a particular class [see supervision guideline];

(f) such other conditions as the Board thinks fit.
