About

The Veterinary Services Regulatory Board of South Australia (the Board) is an independent statutory authority responsible for regulating veterinary services for the purposes of maintaining high standards of competence and conduct by veterinarians.

Although the Board reports annually to the South Australian Parliament through the Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development (PIRSA), it operates independently and the Minister cannot direct the Board in the exercise of its statutory functions.

Under the Veterinary Services Act 2023, the Board:

  • determines applications for registration
  • recognises courses of education or training that provide qualifications for registration on the general register or the specialist register
  • determines the requirements necessary for registration on the general register or the specialist register
  • determines the specialties in which a person may be registered on the specialist register
  • prepares or endorses codes of conduct, professional standards and guidelines
  • prepares or endorses standards relating to minimum requirements for registered premises
  • receives and deals with complaints made about the conduct of veterinarians
  • provides advice to the Minister as may be appropriate or requested by the Minister and
  • provides information and advice to veterinarians and the public about relevant legislation, codes of conduct, professional standards and other standards and guidelines prepared or endorsed by the Board
  • confers and collaborates with other veterinary regulatory authorities to ensure effective national exchange of information and promote uniformity and consistency in the regulation of veterinarians within Australia
  • carries out other functions assigned to the Board by or under this Act or by the Minister.
